What to Expect After Treatment

Gum Soreness & Tenderness

Your gums may feel slightly sore, swollen, or tender for 1–3 days, especially if you had tartar build-up or gingivitis.

You may notice minor bleeding when brushing or flossing. This should reduce as your gums get healthier with proper care.

Some teeth may feel sensitive to cold, hot, sweet, or acidic foods/drinks.

Sensitivity is most noticeable in areas where tartar was removed and the root surface is exposed.

This is temporary and usually improves within a week with proper oral hygiene and sensitivity toothpaste.

Teeth may look brighter and feel smoother immediately after scaling/polishing.

Gums may appear slightly red or puffy right after treatment but should heal and tighten around the teeth within a few days.

If you had airflow (air polishing), surface stains will be removed, and your teeth will look cleaner and fresher instantly.

You may notice a slight salty or powdery taste if you had airflow/air polishing — this fades quickly.

Some patients describe a fresh, smooth feeling on their teeth after treatment.

In some cases, your teeth may feel slightly loose or “different” when biting for 1–2 days after tartar removal.

This is normal and happens because tartar that was “holding” the teeth has been removed, allowing the gums to heal back into place.

How to Take Care

Oral Hygiene

Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Floss gently but consistently to keep gums healthy.

Use a sensitivity or fluoride toothpaste if you feel discomfort.

Avoid very hot, cold, or acidic foods/drinks for 24 hours.

Refrain from smoking or alcohol as they slow gum healing.

Drink plenty of water to help flush bacteria and protect enamel

Schedule scaling & polishing every 6 months (or more often if recommended by your dentist).

Airflow polishing may be advised for patients with heavy stains, braces, or gum treatment needs.

If you notice persistent bleeding, swelling, or pain beyond 3 days, book a review appointment.
